Got cut off at the end, there was about 2 mins left on it, damn! but anyways..This is a trip that 17 students and 4 teachers from my school went on in January 2008. We travelled to the Dominican Republic to live with the families there in a town called Consuelo. They were so called “middle class.” This is a slideshow of our experience there that begins with some scenery of the village and town, then some of the children and families living in the bateyes (where the sugar cane workers live) and some of our own personal pictures. Enjoy, and hope you get something out of it!

your the same people to whites…its funny to listen to you try to seperate yourself from Hiti.
There should be more of DR than this, why would you want people think the other side of the resort in like this?
There are many cities and many nice places in the DR, you didn’t had to show like RD equals a bunch of huts with ground floor and not electricity like in COngo or something, I really can’t make sence of your video other than to damage the image of the country.
yes we are in 2010,and if you and your ideas stay like that, you will be then in 1910 and not 2010.
Wake up man, everythingcan be posible.bye bye Amigo….you are a negative energy for your island La Espa~ola, with people so weak like you nobody can go ahead.bye
We are definitely in 2010, Haiti is not in 2010. Wake up and smell the coffee jerk off. You cannot compare a industrialized country someone in Europe to either Haiti or Dr. These are developing countries which barely make enough to feed themselves. Think before you type more nonsense.
you and your retarded ideas,What has the diference of history of both countries?Think ahead man,we are in 2010,look what happen in Europe, take example from then and let your old primitive mind back, they are now a big comunity of people, and the are not and island like La Espa~ola and they are now living toguether, east and west Europe.
If Haiti and the D.R get togueter you,l hav more space to move, and every one can keep the tradition as they feel like.
Only for me? Excuse me? Which planet are you living on? These are two different countries with two distinct histories. Why don’t you tell the USA and Mexico to unite? Go push your unification ideas with them and see how far it gets you.
what are you taking about?yes 2 diferents countries only for you…dont be ingnorant, yes it is right that both countries have diferents history but dont tell me that you must come to that point with your close neighbour….you are making thing more dificult than they are at the whole caribean area and your own island.
Your own goverment is responsible for that, suporting the rich people and the trafic of cheap sugar cane workers.
We’re not one big family. We’re two different countries just like Canada and US, Mexico and Honduras, Cuba and Jamaica. So please get over it.
If we really want to solve this we have to punish anyone hiring an illegal migrant. This will solve the Haitian problem. There are 2 million undocumented Haitians living in Dominican Republic, it’s time to send most of these people back.
Dominicans have to stop being racist with Haitians. They should make a new and big Nation among the 2 countries and love each other as a big family.
from a Cuban.
Los Dominicanos deberian llevarse mejor con sus vecinos Haitianos y no explatarlos tanto,al final son casi una misma nacion, deberian ayudarse uno con el otro.

Great set of images! I did that trip with my school in ‘96 and will never forget.
The point of the video was not to make a statement that that bateyes and consuelo are the same place, i’m aware of the conditions being much worse in the bateyes, but towards the end is pictures of my group, the homes in consuelo we stayed in & other places we visited in Santo Domingo. All this video is is a montage of pictures from a great trip, & gives pple a visual of whats going on bcuz most stay in resorts when they go and don’t see the other side of things
love this video i did the same thing with my school 3 years ago. never forget <3
I think you should really differentiate more between the city of consuelo and the bateyes because even though their living conditions aren’t as great as ours, the bateyes are really much worse and this makes it seem like the bateyes are a part of the town.
Anyways, I think i’ve been to alot of the same places that you were at.
that’s a problem that people are trying to change. not everyone is prejudice against haitians there though.
Did you do this with your school? i just went on a trip to the dominican with my school and alot of your pictures look like the same places i was at!..it was amazing.
And also, about the picures, probably about half of them weren’t taken by me, they were taken by the kids that we interracted with. They were fascinated by the cameras and wanted to see pictures of themselves bcuz a lot of them never had before. And i can’t help that thats the part of consuelo i was stationed in, i’m just putting up what I saw, not wut u or neone else thinks i shud have seen.
I never said that they weren’t generous and kind because they were probably the most welcoming people I’ve ever met so i dunno where u got the idea of how this makes them look unkind. Consuelo is different from the bateyes though. Thats where most of these pictures are from those are the very poor areas of the country where pple are starving living on what equals to $2 a day in Canadian dollars. The whole point of this is to make pple aware bcuz most pple think of resorts when they think of DR.
wow! I’m not saying that your a bad person in any way for making this this video, but what the hell!?!This video makes the people and children of Consuelo look like they live in Zimbabwe or something! I lived in Consuelo for a year and it was the best time I have ever spent in any country! The people there are generous, kind and caring.. Okay so they aren’t the richest people on the planet but they aren’t starving! It kind of looks like you purposly took pictures of the poorest parts of Consuelo!
ah man i loved the footage. i think i remember when you guys were in consuelo i was living there as a missionary. your video brought back some good memories.
Great footage! I really enjoyed wathcing it Can’t wait to get back to DR in Sept and Nov 2008
