Outdoor Activities
More than one-third of Kangaroo Island is made up of national and conservation parks, which help to preserve the amazing plant and animal life that abounds on “KI”, as it is known by the locals. There are four major parks on Kangaroo Island: Flinders Chase National Park, where you will find Remarkable Rocks, beautiful walking trails and Admirals Arch; Kelly Hill Conservation Park, with its limestone caves; Seal Bay Conservation Park, where you can visit the third largest (and the only one available to the public) colony of Australian sea lions; and Cape Willoughby Conservation Park offers tours of the first lighthouse to be built in south Australia.
There are plenty of trails for you and your family to walk, hike and bike, and if you are lucky, sometimes you may even be treated to a whale or dolphin sighting while you are walking along the coast. For the serious hiker, there is the Hanson Bay Hike at Kelly Hill Conservation Park. This is a six-hour hike that offers amazing scenery, including lagoons, sand dunes and a spectacular coast line.
Fun and Educational Tours
There are a number of exciting tours that you and your family can go on when you are visiting Kangaroo Island. There are some terrific nocturnal tours where you can see animals in their natural habitats at night. Enjoy one of these educational tours at the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, book one of the Alkirna Nocturnal Tours, or visit wildlife such as penguins, wallabies, koalas, kangaroos and other nocturnal animals that are most active at night.
Enjoy penguin and aquarium tours every evening at the Kangaroo Island Penguin Centre, where you will see penguins, cuttlefish and seahorses, or visit at feeding time and watch the pelicans as they are fed. More wildlife tours are available at Parndana Wildlife Park, where you have the opportunity to feed and pet many of the animals, including the cute koalas, which are not bears, but marsupials.
There are many more wildlife and nature tours on Kangaroo Island that you and your family will love. In fact, you can spend your entire vacation just enjoying the scenery and animals. Maybe you should consider extending your stay so that you can see some of the other sights. Don’t forget, Kangaroo Island is famous for its gastronomical delights, so you have to take a few food tours as well, including to the Island Pure Sheep Dairy and Pure Ligurian Honey.
