– 48% of Safe Harbors’ respondents would book travel away from a bankrupt airline –

BALTIMORE, September 15, 2005 – An airline’s bankruptcy can send a significant portion of business travelers to other carriers, according to a recently completed Business Travelers Poll conducted by Safe Harbors Travel Group, a leading business travel management company.

The informal survey, which queried more than 6,200 visitors at www.SafeHarbors.com, asked “Would you book travel away from an airline because of bankruptcy?” Forty-eight percent of respondents answered “yes.” Safe Harbors’ website attracts mostly business travelers and travel managers.

“The results of the survey are a clear indication that airlines in bankruptcy face a very serious challenge with business travelers,” said Jay Ellenby, president and CEO of Safe Harbors Travel Group. “While there are always additional contributing factors to booking business travel, bankruptcy is clearly a major issue.”

“The poll results support what we hear regularly from clients,” added Ellenby. “Reliability is a critical concern of business travelers and travel managers. The uncertainty that bankruptcy adds to a travel purchase decision can easily tip-the-scales to another carrier. Business travelers are also protective of their frequent flyer benefits and want to accrue travel credits with more stable carriers. As a result, airlines already struggling with bankruptcy are compelled to spend even more on marketing and lower fares to attract and retain business travelers.”

The poll was concluded prior to the bankruptcy filings by Delta Airlines and Northwest Airlines. “These are the third and fourth major airlines to declare bankruptcy since the attacks on September 11th, preceded by United Airlines and US Airways, leaving few alternatives for business travelers,” commented Ellenby. “The change in business traveler behavior is fairly predictable. However, while the long-term impact of the bankruptcies remains to be seen, at this time we are confident that there will be little or no impact on short-term travel itineraries. Recent good news from US Airways is raising hopes they will emerge from bankruptcy soon as another solid travel alternative.”

Safe Harbors Travel Group is shaping a new age of business travel management. Safe Harbors? expertise in business travel, global travel infrastructure, vendor management, expense and accountability reporting and travel information systems is helping clients achieve their business goals with a higher return-on-travel-investment. Headquartered in Baltimore, Safe Harbors provides global travel management to more than 100 corporate clients.

One of the major issues today with consumers in regards to air travel is the amount of lost baggage. Did you know that over 4 million bags a year are either lost, damaged, or in some cases, both? It is important to think about these things when preparing for take off and included in this article are several tips to help secure your luggage while flying to your destination. First, I’d like to mention that over the holidays years ago my bag was lost when the airline changed gates on my flight. This was not a small change but a change which had us traveling across the entire Houston airport from one side to another before our flight took off in 15 minutes. Not fun. Of course, when we arrived at our destinations much of the people who were in the same situation as myself had lost baggage as well. The lost luggage claim line was quite long that evening at 11pm.

My baggage did arrive, however, about a week later. The only problem was that the baggage from LAX came 90% emptied out. All the Christmas gifts and clothing (even my underwear)…gone. It is a known truth that the airlines do in fact subcontract the baggage returns to your address. Mine was a rather interesting experience where the man called on the phone and told me to leave a note saying it is ok that they leave my bag outside my door if I would not be home whenever they so decided to deliver my bag. This, I believe, is where the problem occurred as I would have rather just picked it up myself from their location, but rather the delivery people did not allow it. I am not sure how this came about but I did learn a valuable lesson. There are many little stipulations that airlines have in regards to getting reimbursed for stolen luggage. First, there are a few things they do not cover.

Items such as jewelry, electronics, furs and negotiable instruments are not covered by the airlines if lost or stolen, so keep those items with you on the plane. Next, every airline may have a different policy and many even give more priority to first class and frequent fliers over everyone else. Once you do receive payment for the stolen items, it is in a depreciated value and a lot of times they will require a receipt (in my case, receipts were required if items were valued $100 or more.) So what can travelers do to protect themselves from baggage problems? There are several things you can do, some more convenient than others. First, and most obvious, would be to simply pack light and take your luggage on the plane with you. Next, would be to take those items that you will need shortly after getting off the plane, such as toiletries and items needed for meetings or gifts for those you may be traveling to visit. Remember those electronic devices, furs, jewelry and the items not covered by the airlines in case something does happen.

Identifying your bag is another important thing to remember if you ever need to file a claim. So, always make sure your name and contact information is located on the outside of your baggage as well as inside in case the tags put on the bags should fall off and the airline needs to reach you. Take a quick picture of your bag before checking in, just in case something is broken off or torn apart during the flight. After you arrive to your destination, take a quick peek inside your bag and make sure nothing was skimmed off the top by thieves with access to your bags. Lastly, if you really do not want to check in bags and have a little extra money, you can always ship the luggage overnight via FedEx or Luggage Concierge. I know it seems a little over the top, but everyone has preferred methods and many people actually pay the $50 or so it costs just to have that peace of mind and their baggage simply delivered to their door. One out of about 150 travelers ever have a problem with a mishandled bag last year. So if there is one thing to remember, it is always a good idea to simply take precautions with your baggage especially during the holidays and have a great flight.

Traveling is not what it used to be! So I realized I had to change my bad habits to better protect my aching back.

This became quite clear. On my first recent trip, I did everything wrong. I aggravated my back and created unnecessary back pain.

Then I got smart and figured what to do so I didn’t arrive in agony with an aching back. It made so much difference I’m going to share them with you.

Airline Is Not Easy On Your Body

Flying causes us to use our bodies in ways that are not normal for us in our every day life. When traveling, we are twisting, turning, and lifting heavy suitcases in ways that are abnormal. We are bending over to take our luggage off the baggage claim tram. We are putting our carry on luggage in the over head bin. This is like weight lifting! It is certainly not what we do in our daily life.

Then, let’s not forget the uncomfortable seat on the airplane with the cramped space the airlines leave you today.

So here are the 10 tips that I want to share with you to keep your back from aching, too.

Airline Travel Tips

1)Pack light – Think about the clothes you will pack. Choose the lighter ones. Coordinate outfits so you need fewer clothes.

2)Order a wheel chair – Don’t be proud! Believe me, you can save yourself a lot of pain if you let someone else ‘taxi’ you to the gate. This is really important with short connecting flights. But frankly, you get special treatment when you are going through airport security. I’ve found that wheel chairs have priority for security checks.

3)Preboard – You will have help with every aspect of your getting seated. The Flight Attendant will help you to get settled, and you won’t be rushed. He or she should offer to put your luggage in the luggage rack. By the way, if you are in a wheel, you will be preboarded.

4)Don’t lift your carry on luggage into the luggage rack – Let the flight attendant help you. Or ask a gentleman near you to put it up and take it down for you. If there is no one around to help you, pick up the luggage in stages. First, put it on the seat. Then move it up on the arm of the seat. Then to the back of the seat. Then into the luggage rack.

5)Don’t twist while moving any luggage – Twisting is disastrous for your lower back, especially when you are moving something heavy. Instead move your feet in little steps to get into the right position.

6)Reserve an aisle seat – There are many benefits to this. You have more space. You can get up easier and don’t have to twist and contort your body as much. You can also move about the cabin easier to move your body so it is better oxygenated to reduce the pain you might have otherwise.

7)Use a seat support – If you have your own, this is the best. Otherwise, make sure you have an extra blanket and/or pillow for back support. Recline your seat as often as possible. You take pressure off your back by doing this. Also, keep your knees at a right angle to support your back. Use a pillow, your carry on luggage, or an inflatable device to put under your feet to get the right angle.

8)Take your pain relief meds – I always use a topical pain relief product. I put it on my lower back and anything else that is hurting before I leave for the airport. This helps the back pain from flaring up as much.

Also, I use my 1 Minute Pain Relief immediately after I get off the plane. I see no need in letting pain get the better of me by pretending it won’t rear it’s ugly head.

9)Drink lots of water – This will help keep your body oxygenated and help flush out toxins in your body that add to and agitate pain. Don’t hesitate to ask for water if the flight attendants don’t offer you what you desire.

10)Walk up and down the aisles – You will avoid becoming as stiff by moving about the airplane and stretching. Do be careful. Stable yourself by touching the back of the seats. You do not want to fall. Try to move about the cabin every 30 minutes.

I hope these tips have helped you. Please share anything you’ve discover so we can help our fellow pain victims.

Do you use a travel checklist? If not, then this scenario probably sounds familiar. You’re halfway to the airport and realize you forgot something you need for your trip. Sometimes it’s nothing important, or just something you can pick up in the airport or hotel gift shop, but sometimes it’s a very important item like your driver’s license or passport. Ugh! Now you have to turn around and go back home to get the needed item. Let’s hope you don’t miss your plane!

Before setting off on your trip, consult this travel checklist complete with airline and vacation travel tips.

Reservations: Confirm your reservations for flight, hotel, and rental car. Most of the time you will not encounter any problems, but on the rare occasion you do, it’s much easier to fix prior to your vacation rather than after you’re already on your way.

Passport: Make sure you have your passport and also check to see that it has not expired. For certain countries your passport must be valid for six months after the date you travel so verify this before you leave. Also make sure you fill in the emergency contact details in your passport.

Airline Tickets or E-Ticket: If you don’t have a physical ticket, confirm your E-ticket with the airline before you leave.

Visa: If required.

Travel Insurance: Consider whether you want to purchase travel insurance and make sure you have these documents.

Driver License: Don’t leave this at home and make sure it is not expired. Be aware of the driving laws where you plan to visit.

Auto Insurance Card: If you are renting a car you will need this.

Copies of Important Documents: Keep copies of important documents in a separate location than the originals.

Local Currency: If you are traveling out of the country, be sure to have some local currency on hand.

Credit Cards: I recommend keeping at least one emergency credit card with you at all times. Call the credit card company if you are going out of the country and let them know.

Adaptor/Plug: If leaving the country, check to see what type of adaptor you may need and take this with you.

Language Phrase Book: If you are headed to another country, bring along a phrase book to help with communication.

Medication: Be sure to pack your medications especially if they are prescription. Keep them in your carry-on for safekeeping.

Glasses or Contact Lenses and Cleaner: Don’t forget these.

Tell a Friend or Relative Where you will Be: Give someone the details of your trip and an idea of where you will be in case of emergency.

Travel Guide: Pick up a good travel guide to wherever you are going.

Vaccinations: Check with your physician to see if you or your kids need any vaccinations if you are traveling abroad.

Cell Phone: Keep a mobile phone with you and make sure you know what you’ll be charged as far as roaming fees. Nothing worse than arriving back home to a huge cell phone bill. If you are traveling internationally, make sure your phone will work. Don’t forget your charger.

Prepaid Phone Card: Good to have just in case.

Contact Numbers to Report Lost Credit Cards or Traveler’s Checks: If you lose your wallet you’ll want to have the phone numbers readily available. Keep the numbers in a separate place.

Guide Maps: If you are going somewhere unfamiliar, get an up-to-date map to take along.

Reading Material or Audio Books: Bring along a book or magazine for the plane trip. Or if you have a music player, try an audio book.

Journal: A journal or notebook for your trip is fun, and is a great way to remember the details.

Addresses of Friends and Relatives: You might want to send a postcard.

Camera: Don’t forget your cameras and take along your manual too. Also of course batteries, film, memory cards, chargers, etc.

Binoculars: Depending on where you are going, you might find these useful.

Travel Alarm Clock: Most hotels these days provide an alarm clock but it’s good to take a small one along with you just in case.

Plastic Bags for Dirty Laundry: Keep your dirty clothes separate, just stuff them into a plastic bag. You’ll find they take up less space in your suitcase this way too.

Travel Pillow: These are great for the plane. Buy them beforehand or you will pay extra at the airport.

Extra Suitcase: For carrying home all of your souvenirs.

You don’t have to forget things on your vacation! Use this airline travel checklist on your next trip and save yourself the hassle of forgetting the things you need for your vacation. If you need inexpensive airline tickets go to http://www.the-cheap-traveler.com to learn how to find really cheap airfare.

Our number one airline travel tip is: Check in early!

Airlines require domestic travelers to check-in 1 hour prior to departure. International flights require a 2 hour check-in. If you do not arrive on time and if the flights are overbooked, the possibility exists that your seat will be given away. In addition, there will be a greater opportunity when you arrive early to have your name on the “top of the list” for an upgrade.

Be aware that some airlines have restricted carry on luggage policies. For example:

Northwest – Maximum check-in is two and carryon luggage is limited to one piece plus a purse/briefcase/laptop computer for all flights. First class international is allowed two carry on items.
American/TWA – Check one and carryon two or check two and carryon one.
Delta – Check one and carry-on two or check two and carry-on one.
Southwest – Check up to three and carryon two.
United – One carryon in economy and two in business/first class.
USAir – Carryon two
Continental – Carryon two

Store your carryon luggage in the compartment across from you so you can keep an eye on it.

Be sure to carry photo identification.

Be aware of Safe Harbors emergency service telephone number (International / domestic) This will help you with questions concerning your ticket or itinerary changes. The number is printed on all itineraries. Calling the airline directly can cause confusion and be costly.

Never make enemies or be abrasive with airline ticket agents or gate agents. Regardless of the situation, most people are more than accommodating when approached with respect.

Travel Reservations

Do not make a reservation with an airline directly. They will not have all of your company data accessible including your discounted rates, frequent flier numbers, travel preferences, travel policy information and payment procedures. They will only give you their information not competing information where the agency will.

When a travel reservation is made with Safe Harbors, your confirmation number for your flight, hotel room and car is your guarantee! If you arrive at any of these counters and they claim that you do not have a reservation, chance has it that they are trying to sell you a higher priced car, hotel room and airline reservation. This is a common practice for these vendors to recreate a reservation so that a commission will not have to be paid and that last minute availability is achieved, resulting in a higher fare/rate. If this should happen, be assertive and demand the guaranteed rate/fare is utilized on the confirmed itinerary from Safe Harbors.
